Reed Baker Leaves FGCU

Jan 17, 2011 6:48 PM

Florida Gulf Coast coach Dave Balza announced that senior guard Reed Baker resigned from the program on Monday and will not return for the rest of the 2010-11 season.

“We want to thank Reed for his numerous contributions to our program and the University,” said Balza. “He has been an integral part of our FGCU basketball family for the past four years and it’s unfortunate that he has decided not to finish the season. We will miss him and wish him the best in the future.”

Baker started 14 games this season and was the team’s second-leading scorer at 14.4 points per game.

Improvement Not Enough For Florida Gulf Coast

Jan 7, 2011 12:07 PM

Florida Gulf Coast has lost three straight and nine of their last 10 games.

After a disappointing blowout loss to Belmont at home on Monday night, the Eagles faded in the second half against Lipscomb on Wednesday night.

They closed within 61-57 on a 3-pointer by sophomore guard Hunter Miller with 6:55 to play, but they didn't score for more than six minutes.

"I thought the kids played with a lot of heart," said coach Dave Balza. "I was pretty brutally honest the other night. We as a collective group did not do, in the second half, what we've done the rest of the year, which is fight every possession. Tonight they continued to fight every possession."

They will play East Tennessee State on Saturday.

"It's a tough stretch," Balza said. "But it's hopefully like we've been doing, seasoning us for down the road. We've got to keep pushing and pushing until we get it all figured out and put together."
